2015 2 months offer

It’s the holiday season, and most of us have a goal to get in better shape, work out more, or lose weight. What better way to do that than by trying out something new and getting in shape at the same time!

We are offering two months of FREE classes to new adult students. No strings or contracts required.

All ages, body types, and fitness levels are welcome to join. Bring a friend and train together!

2014 New Year’s Day Swim

New Year’s Day was greeted with a warm fire, delicious coffee cake, and an abundance of really cold water. The New Year’s Day swim has become an annual event for many Mo Duk Pai students and was started over four decades ago by Professor King.  When you begin the year with a challenge this great, there isn’t anything you can’t overcome. What better way to bring in the New Year?

Joined by students of all ages from our sister schools we converged on Kelley Point Park. Beginning with some conversation surrounding courage, strength, and visualizing challenges gave us pause to reflect and project on mountains conquered and yet to face. Then the plunge  strengthening resolve to confront all challenges 2014 offers. Here are some pictures of the swim. Congratulations to all who braved the frigid mighty waters, well done! It’s definitely something to be very proud of. Thanks for coming and SEE YA NEXT YEAR!!!!!

Holiday Schedule

Please make note of the change in class schedule over the Holiday season.

December 24th, 25th, 26th, 31st and January 1st – No Kung Fu classes!  There will be regular classes on December 27th and December 29th.  We will be back on track January 2nd!

Hope you all have a wonderful adventure with your families.  Rest up.  Eat good food.  Drink good clean water and forget about the exercise for a week or two.  Let your body refresh and get ready to step it up after the New Year.  I’ll help with that. :)

Much love,

Swimming Anyone?

New Year's Day Swim 2014-2C’mon now you know you want too!

What better way to start off the New Year.  Off with the old and on with the new.  It’s a challenge for sure.  Most of us are not overly fond of cold water let alone cold water on a cold winters day.  Yes, that is snow you see in the background from last year.  I can tell you first hand though every person who participated was glad they did and proud of meeting the challenge.

I try to do it every year, no matter where I am.  The best times have been in southern California. :)  The harder times were in Maine.  Every time was a great experience.  Come out and give it a try this year.  You’ll be glad you did.  Don’t worry, we’ll have a nice little bonfire to warm up next to after we take a dive.

Much love,

Holiday Gift Certificates for Kung Fu Classes

Bet you’ll be seeing that word a lot over the next month.  ”Holiday Greetings”, greeting cards, seasons greetings you get the idea.
Here’s another idea.  How about a stocking stuffer for Kung Fu classes.  This can be used for NEW students only!  Sorry current students are not eligible for the discount.  The cost is $50 for 1 month, $90 for 2 months and $125 for 3 months.
Get a workout, learn self defense, lose those extra holiday pounds and have a ton of fun while doing it.  No better way to show your affection for a loved one.  Sure beats wasting money on electronics or that ugly old sweater that’s just going to Goodwill anyway. :)
There is a limited number available so get em while they are hot!  Please email for more information.
Much love and Happy Holidays,
Sifu Sean

Hooray, my favorite holiday is here!!!!  I love the smells, the tastes, family time and a full belly.  I hope you all get a chance to spend some quality time with those you love most.  Let them know how special they are to you.

While I am always and especially grateful for the wonderful students I am privileged to share the art with, alas, there will be no classes on Thursday (Thanksgiving) or Friday.  I need a day to recover from my full belly.  :)

Enjoy the day.  Be prepared to work off those extra calories next week.  There will be regular classes starting again on Sunday sure to make you sweat it all off.

Much love,

Kids and Martial Arts

Oct_2013_kids_tournament-1There will be a kids martial arts tournament held at the Academy of Kung Fu on SE 21st and Powell (3228 SE 21st) on October 19th.

The approach of the tournament has caused me to think a bit about what it means for kids to train martial arts.  I’ve had a tremendous amount of feedback from parents for which I am extremely grateful.  In EVERY case the mom or dad has expressed that training Kung Fu has improved their childs behaviour.  It shouldn’t be a surprise considering a few of the principles most martial arts focus on are self discipline, self control, compassion, awareness and good health.  Still, every time I hear a parent say how much Kung Fu has helped their child it reinforces in me the virtues of the art. Oct_2013_kids_tournament-1

So kids, (parents feel free to share this please) if you train here at NPAKF its important that you understand that as you get higher up in rank there will be more expected of you than to simply know how to punch, kick and defend yourself.  I will be communicating with your parents to determine if training is helping you in everything you do.  Are you doing your homework?  Are you getting along well with sisters and/or brothers?  Do you help with chores around the house?  Are you kind, and respectful, a good listener, a strong support for those who may be weaker than you and I don’t mean just physically weaker.  What you learn through your martial arts training should be seen in everything you do.  Getting your next sash depends on it!  If you are truly becoming a real martial artist you will become a stronger person.  A stronger person makes the world a little bit better place by doing things to help others and the planet.  Does your training reflect that?  It should for kids AND adults.

Take a minute to think about how training martial arts is helping you become a better person.  Go out of your way this week to do at least one nice thing you wouldn’t normally do for someone.  You may be surprised to find it makes you feel even better than the person you were nice to.

Much love,
